Story

In 1983 my lovely son John, aged twenty-one, was diagnosed with schizophrenia. As there was no mental illness on either side of the family, this was a cruel and surprising blow.

The following year my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and when she was unable to be alone she came to live with us. Now I had two loved ones living their nightmare existences under our roof. At times I felt I was in the cuckoo’s nest and it took every ounce of courage to cope with the situation.

Mental illness was largely ignored at the time and was a somewhat taboo subject. Consequently Government funding was poor, and as a result, so was research.

Over recent years funding for mental illness and related brain disorders has improved, and as a result NeuRA and other research organisations have been formed. NeuRA has made quantum leaps forward in its research programmes and it’s likely that in time, cures will be found.

We are all faced with the prospect of either ourselves or a loved one succumbing to a mind or brain disorder…be it, Alzheimer’s, bipolar, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s, autism etc.

NeuRA needs funding to continue its great work. The Books For Brains incentive offers an avenue whereby readers can assist in that direction.

Please support me through Books for Brains and make a donation now.
